Adapting the Unadaptable: Page to Screen
Every season someone insists a beloved book could never work on screen, and sometimes they are nearly right. Inner monologue, strange page layouts, and jokes built on the panel resist a straight translation.
The adaptations that succeed do not copy; they reinterpret. They find the motion hidden in a still drawing and the rhythm buried in a wall of text.
When it works, the result is not a lesser copy but a companion piece, each version better for the other existing.
